USA v Germany – Paris 2024 Olympic Games women’s football as it happened

FT USA 4-1 Germany

Well that’s a marker down, I’d say. The USA have decisively put Germany away 4-1 here in Marseille, and look more than capable of going all the way this summer.

90+6′ USA 4-1 Germany

The US are almost in again as a late lunge from Hegering cuts out a through pass from Lavelle to Nighswonger.

90+2′ USA 4-1 Germany

More US changes; Nighswonger for Rodman and Krueger for Fox.

90′ USA 4-1 Germany

Buhl forces a parried save from Naeher, as we move into five minutes of added time, minimum.

89′ Goal! USA 4-1 Germany

This is a glorious goal. Rodman wins the ball in her own half, spins away and moves forwards down the right. She then finds Swanson in the middle, who takes the ball and drives forwards before shifting it to the unmarked Williams on the left of the area. Williams drives the ball back across goal and into the far corner; we’re done here.

86′ USA 3-1 Germany

Girma cannily plays the ball out off Gwinn to win a goal kick. She has been note perfect tonight.

85′ USA 3-1 Germany

Williams replaces Smith for the USA.

84′ USA 3-1 Germany

This is a good save. Rodman runs the ball into the area on the right, and opens up to shoot with her left foot. She’s aiming for the top bin, but Berger palms the ball over.

82′ USA 3-1 Germany

A rare break from the US sees Swanson get free down the left, but she fails to pick anyone out with her drilled low cross.

80′ USA 3-1 Germany

This game is drifting. The first 45 minutes was high quality at high speed, but the second half has been a muted affair. Both teams, with a win in the bank already, will be confident of advancing to the last eight whatever happens here and with another game in three days time, no one is overdoing it.

77′ USA 3-1 Germany

Popp can’t continue, and is replaced by Senss.

75′ USA 3-1 Germany

Popp is down and having treatment, so the players treat themselves to a water break.

74′ USA 3-1 Germany

The general play has become very loose here, with both teams struggling to keep the ball right now. Germany might think about some more changes here, to get some energy back into this performance.

71′ USA 3-1 Germany

Into the last 20 we go. The USA are sitting back here, knowing that they have searing pace on the break for when they can repossess the ball.

68′ USA 3-1 Germany

Hrubesch makes a change, replacing Nusken with Lohmann.

67′ USA 3-1 Germany

Gwinn has a shot from the D, but it’s a tired effort straight at Naeher.

65′ USA 3-1 Germany

This is chaotic now. Lavelle gives the ball away cheaply to leave the Americans outnumbered at the back temporarily, but Germany make a hash of working the ball across goal and the chance disappears. The USA then break through Swanson on the left, who gets all the way to the area but then passes the ball straight out of play with good options to her right.

62′ USA 3-1 Germany

What a miss part 2! Now the ball is in the American area, where Brand squares it into the six yard box. A shot from Popp is saved point blank by Naeher, and with the rebound begging to be converted Schuller can’t turn the ball home and the Americans scramble it clear!

59′ USA 3-1 Germany

What a miss! The US brilliantly work Rodman into space on the right of the area, with all the time in the world. Rodman drives a cross low through the six yard box and Swanson connects at the back post, but sends the ball wide of goal. That was game over if that went in, surely.

58′ USA 3-1 Germany

Close! A loose cross into the area breaks for Brand at the back post. She’s 15 yards out and scuffs her shot, which clips the outside of the post and trickles behind.

57′ USA 3-1 Germany

Buhl has been very quiet for Germany but comes alive here. cutting into the American area from the left and shooting low to the near post. Naeher gathers easily, but that’s better from Germany.

54′ USA 3-1 Germany

The United States are bossing this at the minute, that crucial goal just before half-time looks to have deflated Germany a touch. A ‘next goal’ game I think; if Germany can get back in this by pulling one back, we could be on for a barnstorming finish.

51′ USA 3-1 Germany

Smith again gives Germany nightmares down the right, bouncing Hendrich off a loose ball and then charging into the area to win a corner.

49′ USA 3-1 Germany

Brand takes on Dunn down the right, chopping the ball back and forth before hitting a poor cross that’s headed clear at the front post.

47′ USA 3-1 Germany

Smith breaks dangerously into the German area on the right, and wins a corner for her team.

45′ USA 3-1 Germany

Peep! We’re underway again.

HT USA 3-1 Germany

That’s half-time in a cracker of a match in Marseille.

45+6′ USA 3-1 Germany

Oh what a chance! Gwinn overlaps down the right and lofts a near perfect ball in to the penalty area. Nusken is free and glances a header at goal from ten yards out, but sends it wide of the far post; she had to score there.

45+4′ USA 3-1 Germany

A chipped cross from Sonnett is gathered by Berger, who tries to get Brand away down the right. Brand is one on one with Girma and tries to run her down the line, but Girma has the gas and plays the ball back to Naeher.

45′ USA 3-1 Germany

Could that be the crucial strike of the night? Smith is now on a hat-trick, and the USA are in charge. We’ll have seven additional minutes in this half.

44′ Goal! USA 3-1 Germany

It’s three for the Americans! On the left corner of the area Smith does an air shot at a loose ball; she immediately recovers to spin into space and unload a shot at goal. The ball catches a wicked deflection off Gwinn, loops high and up over Berger and clips the far post before bouncing into the goal.

43′ USA 2-1 Germany

The US win a corner. Davidson is limping away from the field, and is replaced by Sonnett.

40′ USA 2-1 Germany

It’s got bitty all of a sudden, with Davidson down after jarring her knee.

37′ USA 2-1 Germany

Gwinn is down here after blocking another dangerous cross from Rodman, so there’s a break in play.

35′ USA 2-1 Germany

Germany almost work the ball right through the middle with a reverse ball threatening to send Schuller clean through, until Girma intervenes and hooks the ball clear of danger. That is excellent defending.

33′ USA 2-1 Germany

Gwinn gets forward in the inside left channel again, and unloads from 20 yards. It’s a fierce hit, but a yard too high.

31′ USA 2-1 Germany

Schuller wins a towering header at the back post for Germany, but the ball runs straight into the hands of Naeher.

30′ USA 2-1 Germany

Germany are a touch rattled here. A panicked clerance from Hendrich lands at the feet of Swanson, who works the ball to Smith in the area. Smith shoots but doesn’t catch it at all, and the ball trickles through to Berger.

28′ USA 2-1 Germany

There’s a brief lull as Berger receives treatment after lunging at the feet of Swanson there.

26′ Goal! USA 2-1 Germany

Ambassador, you are spoiling us! Smith overpowers Hendrich to win a loose, bouncing ball in the D of the area. Smith shoots and it’s parried by Berger, but Swanson react like lightning to bury the rebound from close range. Magnificent stuff, this.

25′ USA 1-1 Germany

Lavelle has a chance of a half-volley from the edge after a knock down by Dunn, but lashes it high over the bar.

24′ USA 1-1 Germany

The Americans steadily played themselves into trouble there, and paid the price for it. It’s been a cracking game so far.

22′ Goal! USA 1-1 Germany

From nothing, Germany are level! Popp is clattered outside the area but play is waved on, as Nusken lays the ball off to Gwinn. She’s 25 yards out, and unleashes a bullet of a low strike past Naeher and into the bottom corner!

21′ USA 1-0 Germany

The US have the ball but it’s mostly in their own half, as Germany press them high. And then…

18′ USA 1-0 Germany

Smith threatens to break away don the left but is impeded by Hendrich on halfway, who gets a yellow card.

16′ USA 1-0 Germany

A nice interchange of positions by the United States sees Swanson released into space down the left. She retrieves the ball and advances into the area, only to shoot straight at Berger from a narrow angle.

15′ USA 1-0 Germany

The USA are in total control now. They work the ball out to Smith on the left wing, who cuts in dangerously but shoots wide of the far post from 20 yards out.

13′ USA 1-0 Germany

The Americans are right on top of this now, and win two quick corners in succession, the last of which is swatted behind by Berger for another.

10′ Goal! USA 1-0 Germany

After a warning shot from a dangerous low ball from Rodman seconds earlier, the deadlock is broken; Rodman plays a quick give and go down the right and breaks into the penalty area. Rodman’s low cross misses Swanson at the front post but Smith arrives at the back post to guide the ball into the net. That was such a well-worked goal.

8′ USA 0-0 Germany

Brand gets on another gallop, this time down the left, but Lavelle matches here stride for stride and wins a free kick for the USA.

7′ USA 0-0 Germany

Brand’s been left free again, high up the pitch on the right, and superbly kills a long hoick down the line in her stride. The ball is on to put Schuller in but Brand overhits it, allowing Fox to come across and clear.

4′ USA 0-0 Germany

Huge chance! The Germans catch the USA with a three on three on the break. Brand drives forwards, twisting and turning into the box, before setting up Schuller with a free hit from ten yards out; Schuller goes low and it’s saved by Berger, and a superb covering tackle on Brand prevents the rebound from being tucked away.

3′ USA 0-0 Germany

It’s all Germany so far, knocking the ball around nicely in their Vimto-esque purple and pink away kit.

1′ USA 0-0 Germany

Peep peep! Off we go in Marseille.

Elsewhere

What a win for Australia! Despite being 5-2 behind after 58 minutes, the Matildas rallied to draw level and then win the game 6-5 with a last minute goal from Michelle Heyman. I haven’t seen a beat of it, but my word!

Anthemics

The teams are out in Marseille, and we’re currently belting out Star Spangled Banner. Not long to go now…

The story so far

Both the USA and Germany recorded 3-0 wins in their opening games, against Zambia and Australia respectively.

Elsewhere in Group B right now, ever get the feeling you might be at the wrong game? Zambia and Australia are locked at five-all in Nice with nine minutes to go!

Frauenteam

After a run of bronze medals in the early editions, Germany’s women finally broke through and won the Olympic title in Rio in 2016. They’re in recovery mode at the moment though, after the shock of an opening round elimination at the World Cup in Australia last year. Horst Hrubesch – who once snagged the European Championship for the German men’s with two goals in the final of Euro 1980 – is in temporary charge.

The US of A

Dominance doesn’t quite cover the USA’s record in the women’s football at the Olympic Games. They won four of the first five tournaments, with the only anomaly an extra-time defeat in the final to Norway in 2000. As such, 2016 and 2020 represent the lean years, with even a bronze in Tokyo below par for this team. The first thing in new coach Emma Hayes’ in-tray is to restore American control over the Olympic title.

Team Talk

The USA are unchanged from their opening round win over Zambia. For Germany there’s a change at left back, with Felicitas Rauch replacing Sarai Linder.

Those Teams:

United States: Naeher, Fox, Girma, Rodman, Dunn, Swanson, Horan, Smith, Davidson, Lavelle, Coffey

Germany: Berger; Gwinn, Hendrich, Hegering, Rauch; Brand, Minge, Nusken, Buhl; Popp, Schuller

Referee: Yael Falcon (Argentina)
