When the Kansas Metropolis Chiefs returned to work on Tuesday, forward of a short-week matchup with the Houston Texans, one query loomed: Will Patrick Mahomes or Carson Wentz play quarterback on Saturday?

Mahomes left the Chiefs’ Week 15 win over the Cleveland Browns with an ankle harm, leaving Wentz to complete the sport. Whereas the face of the league was listed as a full participant in Tuesday’s apply, earlier media remarks by Mahomes, Wentz, and head coach Andy Reid left the difficulty unresolved.

“If [Mahomes] can’t work, then Carson will take those reps that Pat doesn’t,” stated Reid. “We have full confidence in Carson if he has to step in and play. I think everybody — coaches and players — have full confidence that he can go in and do a nice job.”

For Reid, Wentz’s physique of labor by 93 profession begins speaks for itself.

“He’s started in the league and been successful,” the coach famous. “He’s got a great feel for this offense. Very smart. Big arm. I like the way he carries himself. I like everything about him. He should be starting in this league somewhere. He’s a heck of a player.”

Whereas he hopes to play towards Houston, Mahomes echoed Reid’s ideas.

“Carson will be ready to go as well,” he declared. “He prepares as good as anyone I’ve ever been around, and this guy has played a lot of games. So, Coach will do a great job as far as practicing and stuff like that, getting both of us ready to go. My hope is that I am able to go out there and play, but we’ll make the best decision for that at the end of the week.”

Wentz denied that his preparation for this week — with the potential for beginning — could be any completely different.

“The same way I always have, honestly,” he acknowledged. “I got my feet wet a little bit at the end of the last game and felt good out there, and nothing’s going to change this week. Obviously, Patrick’s had some nicks and bruises all year, and I’ve prepared like I was going to play every week. So, on my end, nothing’s really going to change.”

Wentz mentioned being on the sphere for the Chiefs’ remaining two possessions in Cleveland.

“Unfortunately, I had a couple false starts there,” he recalled, “so we’re working by that. Simply getting in that huddle with these guys, I feel, was large for no matter comes our manner. Whether or not it’s this week or no matter, I’ll be prepared.

“So, I think it was beneficial to get out there. [I’m] glad we were able to seal the deal and get the win and all that fun stuff, but we’ll see what happens.”

Sharing the quarterback room with Mahomes has given Wentz an appreciation for what the league’s largest star has endured this season.

“He battles through a lot out there,” Wentz stated of his teammate. “I’ve lived it. I’ve skilled it, and now I’m seeing it firsthand with him. Rehab remedy — he’s in there day by day, and he’s doing the whole lot he can to handle his physique, and he’s doing it the fitting manner. So, a number of respect for the way he competes, how he form of pushes by accidents and nicks and bruises, and it’s not enjoyable.

“It’s not fun always coming in the next day and going out to practice just days after a game and all those things, but he’s done it week in and week out. [I have] a lot of respect for how he handles that.”

Ought to Wentz begin, Reid doesn’t consider the sport plan could be considerably completely different than the one for Mahomes.

“Those two guys are very similar in what they like, which helps,” Reid supplied. “So, you can feed them both kind of the same thing, and, and they’re good with it. So, there’s no more stress than you normally have.”

Wentz believes his prior expertise taking part in for Reid disciple Doug Pederson whereas with the Philadelphia Eagles has helped him in Kansas Metropolis, although he is aware of the offense has modified since Mahomes’ arrival in 2017.

“It was very similar to kind of what I did in Philly,” he stated of his preliminary ideas on getting into Reid’s system, “however simply how the evolution of all of it and simply seeing it after being out of this offense for a few years, it’s been enjoyable to form of see the way it’s advanced and the way it actually caters to some issues that Patrick does very well.

“I think it’ll serve me well in the long run, but just being here and being around him — a great football mind — I love the way he kind of calls the game and sees the game and it’s very creative. That’s been a lot of fun to be a part of.”

Wentz admits that, given the late season, adequate apply time is unavailable to develop into a beginning quarterback. The veteran reiterated that, if known as upon, he is aware of what to do.

“I’ll be ready either way,” he predicted. “There’s no magic quantity [of reps] on it. Clearly the extra the higher, however on the finish of the day that is the NFL. Particularly this a part of the yr, practices look completely different already. There’s not as many reps to go round to start with, so no matter that appears like, I’ll be prepared.

“I’m always in the back going through mentally, walking through it, [and] doing different things on the side. [I’m] getting as ready as I can, but, obviously, sometimes you just don’t get those reps, and you’ve got to go make it happen.”
