Luis de la Fuente just led Spain to glory on Sunday but is reportedly interested in the vacant US men’s national team job.

De la Fuente, 63, shepherded Spain to a 2-1 win over England as La Roja won the 2024 European Championship.

But according to the Washington Post, representatives for the coach contacted US Soccer last week as the federation continues to look for its Gregg Berhalter replacement.

The report states that reps for de la Fuente emailed USSF sporting director Matt Crocker on Friday regarding the position.

De La Fuente extended his Spain contract through 2026 last month.

He has been with the Spanish federation since 2013 and previously managed Athletic Club’s B team, and also served as a youth coach at Sevilla.

The federation are surely thrilled with him after Spain won all seven of their games at Euro 2024, dispatching the likes of Germany and France in the process as well.

The US men’s job became open last week when Berhalter – following a disastrous group stage exit at the Copa America – was fired in his second stint as USA men’s manager.

The Americans opened the tournament with a win over Bolivia but lost to Panama and Uruguay as they crashed out.

Former United States men’s national team manager Gregg Berhalter was fired last Wednesday

After firing Berhalter, US Soccer reportedly approached former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, though the German rebuffed the offer according to The Athletic.

Los Angeles FC’s Steve Cherundolo and the Columbus Crew’s Wilfried Nancy – the last two head coaches to lift MLS Cup – have also been linked to the job.

The USA, along with Mexico and Canada, is of course hosting the forthcoming 2026 World Cup.

The men’s team don’t play again until September 7, a friendly against neighbors Canada.
